Bio
I have had a wide-ranging musical background. I have worked as an accompanist and vocal coach since my teens. Besides singing and playing the piano, I am also proficient on violin, flute, bass, saxophone, clarinet, and have played several other instruments. With over 20 years of teaching and performing experience, I can understand the diverse needs of my students, and can help them apply the principles of healthy vocal technique in whatever style they choose.
After studying voice in college, I found that there were still many gaps in my technique. The vague advice of some teachers such as "darken the tone", "support more", and "bring the falsetto down into the chest" didn't help me to negotiate the break between chest and falsetto/head voice, to increase range and power, or to sing without fatigue. After abandoning singing for some years, I eventually found that in my heart of hearts I needed to sing again, somehow, so I started on the musical theatre stage, where I felt the safest. After a few years, I came back to my classical roots. Most of my singing now is in song recitals, with occasional operatic appearances, but I love all kinds of singing.
My search for a better vocal technique after my college years eventually led me to a functional approach. I have worked with wonderful mentors who have a vast knowledge of how the voice works. I enjoy trying to stay informed of the latest developments in the areas of voice science and pedagogy.
My studio includes students of a large variety of ages and backgrounds. Genres that my students perform include classical, musical theatre, contemporary sacred, rock, country, and jazz, in solo and ensemble settings.
